1984

by George Orwell

1984 cover

I had been putting off reading this book for quite some time.

After seeing it mentioned repeatedly online and how its relevance to today's world is increasing, I decided it was time to read it. I definitely see why it's being labeled a "dystopian classic".

In the novel, art, love, and genuine emotions are seen as threats to the omnipresent Big Brother. The regime's primary goal is to maintain power and suppress differentiation by controlling and manipulating every aspect of human life.

Thinkpol closely monitor for "thought crimes" and exert control over people's thoughts and emotions.

Fear tactics, propaganda, invasive surveillance, and psychological manipulation are all tools utilized by the oppressive government.

It's alarming to realize that there are real countries today that closely resemble the dystopian world described in the book.

Orwell’s 1984 is bleak in a way that still feels actively employed. It did not retire into classic status; it keeps showing up to work.

The book’s horror is not only surveillance, but language being bent until people lose the tools to think clearly. That part is deeply unpleasant and deeply relevant.

I liked the precision of the nightmare. No monsters needed, just bureaucracy, fear, and slogans polished until they shine like knives.

It is not a comfortable read, but comfort is not always the assignment. Some books are alarms, and this one has excellent battery life.
